| Mansfield, TX – Culinary Arts II students at Ben Barber Career Tech Academy will remember Konye Rice on October 17 when the student-run restaurant, Savvy’s Bistro, opens to the public for take out and catering services.
The Culinary Arts program at BBCTA began last school year. Students learned different types of cooking methods, restaurant management, received their ServSafe Certificates and brainstormed all in the first year to accomplish their goal—opening the bistro to the public during lunch hours.
As early as January 2007, the bistro will serve lunch in-house Tuesdays through Thursdays. In the meantime, a reasonably priced menu with selections from Spicy Black Bean Chowder to entrees such as the London broil will provide something for everyone to enjoy.

At the end of the 2005-2006 school year, culinary arts students were asked to complete a final project to provide options for restaurant designs and names. But, when fellow culinary arts student and senior Konye Rice lost her life in a car accident one week before graduation, the students chose to use her final project's design and name for the bistro as their way honor her memory.
“It was a very touching moment,” said culinary arts teacher Jennifer Gause. “For me as a chef and teacher, to see the selflessness of the students over their hard work and wanting to remember their fellow student and friend Konye Rice.”
The name Savvy originates from the name Savannah, which Rice named after her niece.
