Compared to 2004 the Mansfield ISD achieved a cost avoidance in calendar year 2005 of $600,000 in energy. MISD Director of facilities, John Perdue, and his team conducted a year-long test to improve the District's schools and facilities energy use. The test resulted in the identification of potential savings of over six million-kilowatt hours of electricity without any capital costs to the district. In addition, Mansfield ISD has the most schools in the state approved by ENERGY STAR.
The result of saving district energy allotted for 12 schools in MISD to become ENERGY STAR approved buildings. In order to qualify, a building must score a rating of 75 or better. The EPA Rates the performance of buildings on a scale of 1-100 relative to similar buildings nationwide using EPA's national energy performance rating system. The rating system accounts for the impact of weather variations, building size and location. Buildings rating 75 or greater that maintain good indoor air quality and lighting levels may qualify for the ENERGY STAR. A school with a rating of 75 signifies that the school performs better than 75 percent of similar schools across the country.
“Our biggest energy saver so far was implementing automatic shut down of computers,” said John Perdue. Other various energy saving tips include, turning off the lights when leaving a room, adjusting the thermostat to 74 degrees, and reducing printing and copying by using paperless communication methods. “The difference between cooling the district at 72 degrees and 82 degrees may be between $20,000 to $30,000 a week when school is not in session,” stated Perdue.
The following list of campuses (and their scores) were recognized at the August school board meeting: Thelma Jones Elementary, 75; Kenneth Davis Elementary, 75; DP Morris Elementary, 75; Cross Timbers Intermediate, 75; Elizabeth Smith Elementary, 76; Willie Brown Elementary, 78; Imogene Gideon, 78; Martha Reid, 81; Alternative Education Center, 84; Glenn Harmon Elementary, 85; R.L. Anderson Complex, 91; and Tarver-Rendon Elementary with the highest score of 92. |
