Sharon Samuel from Donna Sheppard Intermediate School was awarded the Mansfield ISD Heartbeat Award Monday, April 23. Superintendent Vernon Newsom surprised Samuel with the award, a t-shirt and a cookie bouquet.
Samuel is the registrar at DSIS, and is known for going above and beyond her duties in the manner that she cares for the students.
For example, last year a sixth grade student was having difficulty with his academics and arriving on time to school. Instantly, Samuel knew she needed to be his mentor, and work with the student's father to ensure a positive outcome for his son. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the summer, the father passed away leaving this student and his brother alone in the home. During a time of need, Samuel was able to reach out to the student and continue to mentor him even after he left DSIS. Samuel encouraged him to play football and got up early everyday to take him to practice. Today, she continues to monitor the student's academics and acts as an educational liasion with his grandmother.
 This is just one example of the many significant things that Samuel does for her students. In addition, Samuel reaches out to the Functional Academic Living Skills classroom. Samuel has been at DSIS for three years, and during that short period of time she has positively affected several students and staff members.
"Whenever she enrolls a student who appears to have issues or needs, she makes it a point to get that information about the child to a counselor so the child can be helped," said Donna Sheppard Intermediate School counselor Dixie Dibley.
The Mansfield ISD Heartbeat Team recognizes employees who display heart in their lives and inspires other district employees through their actions. Only district employees are able to nominate Heartbeat members. One winner is selected each month during the school year . |
