Students attending Glenn Harmon Elementary in Mansfield ISD will convert to standardized dress beginning in fall 2006. In Mansfield ISD, campuses can change to standardized dress with the approval of the principal, school site-based committee, PTA and parents.
The initial interest in standardized dress was presented to Harmon Principal Sharon Ferguson by parents and supported by the school's PTA leaders. The results of a Harmon Elementary survey indicated that 597 of the 749 parents approved of standardized dress. Only parents of current Pre-Kindergarten to Third Grade students were surveyed, as current fourth graders will attend intermediate schools in MISD in the fall.
Students will be provided with several options. Clothing items that are not allowed are cargo pants, jeans, jerseys, t-shirts, oversized items and undersized items. Principal Sharon Ferguson has also said that students will be allowed to wear jeans with their approved shirts on select days.
The campus conducted extensive research on cost and availability of possible clothing options before making final decisions. The campus is also developing a plan to help any students that might need economic assistance meeting the new campus dress standard. All students have been required to adhere to a campus dress code in prior years, so they do not feel the new dress code at Harmon Elementary will put any excess economic burden on parents who are obtaining school clothes for their children. |
