Vernon Newsom, Superintendent
When Mr. Newsom came to the District in 1996, Mansfield had one high school – Mansfield High School. The District recently opened its fourth high school, Mansfield Legacy. Construction of a fifth high school was approved by voters in 2006 and is currently projected open in fall 2011. Newsom also championed the construction of the innovative Ben Barber Career Tech Academy, a one-of-a-kind facility that also opened in 2006. Because of the reputation MISD has earned for excellence in education, the District is consistently listed one of the fastest growing school districts of our size in Texas and the nation.
MISD students have consistently performed well on standardized tests and many campuses have achieved the impressive ratings of Recognized and Exemplary from the Texas Education Agency.
Under his direction, a successful District reading initiative has been initiated and the MISD gifted and talented program has set a goal of achieving exemplary status. The MISD Education Foundation was formed in 1998 and has currently contributed over one million dollars for innovative teaching grants to provide unique learning opportunities for the District’s students. Additionally, under the guidance of Vernon Newsom, the school community has passed six successful bond packages.
Mr. Newsom continues to be involved at the state and local level. Some activities include: past study group chair of Region XI Texas Association of School Administrators, TASA Executive Committee; previous Chairman of UIL Legislative Council, current chair of the UIL Legislative Council Athletic Committee, and past President of Texas Association of Suburban and Mid-Urban Schools (TASMUS.) |
